What is a Prenatal Massage?

No matter if it’s your first child, or an exciting new addition to your family, the ten months of pregnancy can be very demanding on the body and mind of a mom-to-be. Pregnancy is an impeccable time to receive a massage, as it promotes relaxation and releases positive endorphins, and helps manage the new pains and discomforts, allowing both mom and baby to leave happier.

What to Expect During Your Prenatal Massage:

During a prenatal massage, you can expect a nurturing and supportive experience tailored to your needs. The session begins with a thorough consultation, where your therapist will discuss your pregnancy journey, any specific discomforts, and your overall wellness goals. After this, you’ll be guided to a comfortable position, either using a pregnancy bolster for support or lying on your side, ensuring your safety and comfort throughout the massage.

The therapist will then use techniques focused on relieving tension in areas such as the lower back, hips, and shoulders, while also enhancing circulation. Modest draping techniques will be used to maintain your privacy and comfort. As the massage progresses, you’ll likely feel a deep sense of relaxation, helping to alleviate common pregnancy-related aches and promote overall well-being. The session concludes with a calming atmosphere, leaving you refreshed and ready to embrace the next stage of your journey.

Faqs

Prenatal massage is a specialized massage designed specifically for pregnant women, focusing on their unique needs and providing relief from the common discomforts associated with pregnancy. Utilizing either pregnancy bolsters, or pillows to allow the expecting mother to be positioned comfortably and safely on their sides, facedown, and/or slightly upright in a reclined position.

Prenatal massages are typically considered safe for all stages of pregnancy, but the approach may vary. During the first trimester, massages are usually more gentle and focus on relaxation. As pregnancy progresses, therapists adapt techniques to address specific discomforts. It's essential to communicate with your therapist about your stage of pregnancy so they can customize the treatment accordingly.

Yes, prenatal massage is generally safe when performed by a qualified massage therapist trained in prenatal techniques. It's essential to consult with your healthcare provider before starting massage therapy, especially if you have any complications, or are considered a “high-risk” pregnancy.

Massages are beneficial throughout the entire pregnancy, however, the second trimester to full term (weeks 13- 40+) is often the best time to receive prenatal massages as many early pregnancy discomforts have typically subsided.

We use bolsters and pillows to help support mom and baby giving relief on the lower back, or in a side lying position comfortably propped with pillows to give you a sense of comfort and tranquility. Special pregnancy bolsters allow mothers to be face down comfortably, taking pressure of the low spine and hips, allowing full relaxation.

Prenatal massage sessions last either 60, 90 or 120 minutes.

Some clients may choose to receive massage in the first trimester. Always consult with your healthcare provider to ensure it’s safe for you.

After your massage, it's important to stay hydrated, rest if needed, and listen to your body. You may also want to avoid strenuous activities for the remainder of the day.
